All leaders in Cub Scouts and scouting in general must undergo training. Training is also open to parents who wish to assist, even if they are not registered as a leader, and YPT is required for any adult to attend longer events like summer camp. The training provided helps ensure that leaders are prepared to deliver a fun, quality program for youth, and to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
All leaders must complete the following to be considered a "Trained Leader", which is required of all registered positions in order for our charter to be renewed each year in the fall.
Youth Protection training (YPT) is required for all BSA registered volunteers, but is open to all adults. You do not have to be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America to take Youth Protection training. For registered leaders, YPT must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s record is not current at the time of re-charter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.
The National Council is also now requiring that ALL adults attending longer events such as summer camp be YPT certified. Any adult who attends Cub Scout Adventure Camp (CSAC) must complete YPT as a result.
To complete or re-certify your YPT, follow the instructions here: Youth Protection Training.
All registered leaders must also complete position-specific training based on the roles they are fulfilling. Leader-specific training can be completed at various instructor-led events held by either the local council or district throughout the year, but is also available online via the BSA Learn Center--aka ScoutingU--available through my.scouting.org.
Position-specific training does not expire, and consists of three major topic areas:
Fast Start Orientation Training - This will acquaint you with basic information about your leadership job.
This is Scouting - An online interactive learning experience that is divided into six modules, introducing participants to several areas of the Scouting program.
Cub Scout Leader Specific Training - This is the nuts and bolts of the program, and focuses on the ingredients needed to make your program a success.
To complete or re-take your position specific training, follow the instructions here: Position Specific Training.
BALOO - On any given overnight event, at least one adult is required to have completed Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. BALOO training is held twice per year, in the fall and the spring, and consists of an online prerequisite course as well as an in person outdoor course. View Details
Program Safety - The safety of our youth, volunteers, staff, and employees is an important part of the Scouting experience. This training, along with your vigilance, helps to ensure risks are identified and mitigated when delivering the Scouting program. View Details
Journey to Excellence - Scouting’s Journey to Excellence is the performance measurement and recognition program for Scouting. The goal of JTE is to maximize key performance that is directly related to producing a successful, growing, and sustainable Scouting program. View Details
