All leaders in Cub Scouts and scouting in general must undergo training. Training is also open to parents who wish to assist, even if they are not registered as a leader, and Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) is required for any adult to attend longer events like summer camp. The training provided helps ensure that leaders are prepared to deliver a fun, quality program for youth, and to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
All leaders must complete the following to be considered a "Trained Leader", which is required of all registered positions in order for our charter to be renewed each year in the fall.
Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) is required for all Scouting America registered volunteers, but is open to all adults. You do not have to be a registered member to take this training. For registered leaders, SYT must be taken periodically to renew your status. If a volunteer’s record is not current at the time of re-charter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.
The National Council is also now requiring that ALL adults attending longer events such as summer camp be SYT certified. Any adult who attends Cub Scout Adventure Camp (CSAC) must complete SYT as a result.
To complete or re-certify your SYT, follow the instructions here: Safeguarding Youth Training.
All registered leaders must also complete position-specific training based on the roles they are fulfilling. Leader-specific training can be completed at various instructor-led events held by either the local council or district throughout the year, but is also available online via the "Training" area on my.scouting.org.
Position-specific training does not expire, and consists of three major topic areas:
Fast Start Orientation Training - This will acquaint you with basic information about your leadership job.
This is Scouting - An online interactive learning experience that is divided into six modules, introducing participants to several areas of the Scouting program.
Cub Scout Leader Specific Training - This is the nuts and bolts of the program, and focuses on the ingredients needed to make your program a success.
To complete or re-take your position specific training, follow the instructions here: Position Specific Training.
BALOO - On any given overnight Cub Scout event, at least one adult is required to have completed Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. BALOO training is typically held twice per year, in the fall and the spring, and consists of an online prerequisite course as well as an in person outdoor course.
Program Safety - The safety of our youth, volunteers, staff, and employees is an important part of the Scouting experience. This training, along with your vigilance, helps to ensure risks are identified and mitigated when delivering the Scouting program.
Succession Planning for Volunteer Leaders - The goal of this training is to teach volunteers both how to recruit new leaders and succession planning for replacing leaders.
And more!
