All leaders in Cub Scouts and scouting in general must undergo training. Training is also open to parents who wish to assist, even if they are not registered as a leader, and YPT is required for any adult to attend longer events like summer camp. The training provided helps ensure that leaders are prepared to deliver a fun, quality program for youth, and to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
This page covers Youth Protection Training (YPT). For details on other forms of training required or generally available, please see Adult/Leader Training.
Youth Protection training (YPT) is required for all BSA registered volunteers, but is open to all adults. You do not have to be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America to take Youth Protection training. For registered leaders, YPT must be taken every two years. If a volunteer’s record is not current at the time of re-charter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.
The National Council is also now requiring that ALL adults attending longer events such as summer camp be YPT certified. Any adult who attends Cub Scout Adventure Camp (CSAC) must complete YPT as a result.
Training focuses on the "three R's" of Youth Protection--Recognize, Respond, Report--and includes concepts and policies around two-deep leadership, the buddy system, privacy, child abuse, and other related topics. Full details regarding policies and procedures can be found on the BSA Youth Protection web page.
To complete or re-certify your YPT, please follow these instructions:
Go to my.scouting.org and create an account, if you don't already have one. You should receive an email notification with your account information, including a member ID/reference number.
From the my.scouting.org portal, click Menu then My Training from the menu list.
The My Training page displays the current status of your YPT, allows you to re-take the course, and also provides a link to print your certificate.
The screens you see may vary slightly as they modify the site or whether you have previously taken the training or not, but some screen shots are provided below for guidance.
If you don't see the ability to start YPT training there, try using this link or browse their course catalog looking for the program titled "Mandatory- Youth Protection Training" (or something similar).
Complete ALL FOUR COURSES. Upon completion, you should receive an e-mail with your training certificate, or you may print it from the My Training page.
Send a PDF copy or screenshot of your certificate to your pack committee. They will store your certificate for reference and for turning it in with any adult application or registration for summer camp.
Your training will automatically be updated in the system and associated with the member ID/reference number issued when you created the account.
